this morning and more 30s." but we are getting out of the 30s in san francisco where we are in the low 30s at sfo. with more sunshine and a bit of a wind factor out there, we will climb into the 30s throughout the next couple of hours. cold front santa rosa, 3 is. 36 livermore. notice it's a little hazy out there. a spare-the-air day today. 40s by noontime for everyone. upper 30s to near 50 by about 4:00. we are not done with our cold snap. the coldest night that we've seen in the past week, it's coming back tonight with another freeze warning. i'll have that for you coming up with another accuweather sevendy forecast. >> in the south day officials are working to save lives as the conditions drop low enough to create life-threatening conditions. at least four deaths have occurred this week at location throughout santa clara county. but a new effort to get people off the street and into a shelter are making a difference.

we report from a san jose shelter protecting more than 200 cold snap refugees. >> in addition to all of the beds, they had to bring in mats to handle the people that will need a place out of the cold. about 225 are expected at had shelter in san jose. >> i have people out there who are freezing and i worry about them because i don't want nobody to pass away like it has been the last couple of days. >> four homeless men froze to death in santa clara county this week, even though there was enough space at local shelters. >> it was a very sad week for us as homeless service providers that four people died on the streets, particularly since we opened the cold weather shelters on monday and there is capacity available for the homeless right now. >> teams of service workers visited railroad tracks and other places homeless people are known to stay, trying to coax them into the shelter. but many prefer their familiar surroundings outdoors. >> it worries me a lot that people aren't going to come in. i don't know if people realize

exactly how dangerous it is outside for them right now. >> the recent deaths have prompted santa clara county residents to donate clothes and blankets and cash to prevent any more loss of life. >> that shouldn't happen. no. in san jose, such a rich city, you can't have people dying outside. that's not okay. >> shelters are bracing for more frigid nights. in san jose, john alston, abc7 news. >> a homeless man was found dead in dublin and authorities say it could be another death due to cold in the bay area. his body was found on valley parkway. an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death is scheduled for tomorrow. if exposure did cause his death, he would be the fifth person in the bay area to die in the frigid temperatures over the past two weeks. there's a lot of snow in the sierra this morning. the placer county town of applegate along i-80 got a good dusting.

and check out the snow from heavenly mountain resorts. the ski area got three feet of new snow from the storm. all ski resorts report they are offering limited operations until they get even more snow. the temperature drop in central valley is threatening lemons and other citrus crops. the fruit on the inside of the trees is okay for now, but the lemon on the outside could be in jeopardy from the big chill. citrus growers are constantly monitoring their crops. they even use a helicopters as a flying wind machine to force warm air closer to the ground. stay on top of the cold weather with our weather app. download it for free at abc7news.com. the palo alto veteran who was held in north korea for more than a month is back in northern california this morning at a family home in santa cruz. merrill newman landed at sfo yesterday to plenty of fanfare. here is lisa amin gulezian with more. >> reporter: merrill newman held on to the ones he missed most while being detained in north korea. after traveling some 24 hours, he's finally back in the bay area. >> it's been a great homecoming. i'm tired, but ready to be with my family. >> the 85-year-old was a man of few words while at san francisco international airport. >> what's the first thing you are going to do when you make it back through your door? >> i think probably take my shoes off. >> after leaving sfo the newman family came here to their second home in santa cruz. it's a house they have owned for decades. once inside they have been relaxing and spending time together. this is a photo taken of merrill and his wife leigh having lunch. they aren't returning to their primary residence in palo alto, where yellow ribbons were tied by neighbors as a symbol of merrill's safe return. vice president joe biden had this to say. >> there is a piece of good news.

the dprk today released someone they never should have had in the first place. >> the north korean government accused newman of committing war crimes and the state media released this video of newman allegedly confessing to those crimes. the news outlet said his apology, his age and medical condition, led to his release. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. at least six americans have been detained since 2009. including kenneth bay, who has been held in north korea for more than a year. he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor after he was accused of plotting to overthrow the government. we are learning this morning the cause of a two-alarm fire that damaged an apartment building in almeda. it happened on san jose avenue. fire officials say the cause was a faulty power cord in a second floor bedroom. the displaced residents are being helped by the red cross.

we are learning more this morning about major league baseball and san jose's effort to bring the a's to the south bay. mlb commissioner bud selig wrote a letter to the a's owner in june denying their bid to head south. that letter came to court friday in a federal court filings. the giants claim san jose as part of their territory. this morning 49ers superstar colin kaepernick is getting ready for this week's game at candlestick. but last week he was spreading cheer to families with sick children and scoring touchdowns at the ronald mcdonald house. carolyn tyler captured that special moment. >> reporter: he was dressed in red and appearing like st. nick but it wasn't st. nick, it was kaepernick. >> i think there's something

special about kids that is very uplifting to everyone. you spend time around them and you see how really purehearted kids are. >> the 49er quarterback paid a surprise visit to san francisco's ronald mcdonald's house and gave them an x-box 1. the house is a home away from home whose families whose children are receiving treatment at the nearby ucf hospital. ronald butler, his wife and his two kids are staying here free of charge while 16--month-old i have the kids here. we couldn't have done it without these people. we really couldn't. >> more than 4,000 families have lived at the ronald mcdonald's house. >> we come from as far away as hawaii and maui. we don't have many family here to help us out, but the ronald mcdonald is the best family for us. >> and now colin kaepernick is part of that family. he's behind mcdonald's x-box 1 promotion and used it to lift the spirits of stressed-out

>> reporter: nelson mandela will be laid to rest in grand style. tuesday a memorial service like the world has never seen. some 95,000 people packed inside the fnb stadium. wednesday through friday the former president will lie in state in the legislative capital. next sunday mandela will be laid to rest in the small village of his boyhood near the cape. those closest to mandela say they will miss the simple things. this 85-year-old is his closest friend and lawyer remembers his friend's consideration even at the hospital these last months. he said, george, make sure you take the jacket with you, don't leave it behind. for a man who was critical, to be concerned about my jacket says something about this man. in the last several months a

number of family squabbles were made public, from what to do with his money to where he should be buried. but since his death the family has thrown a united spoken front, speaking with one voice. memorial to honor him and flags will fly half staff until sup set next sunday. >> there's a meat recall affecting california. federal agriculture inspectors are recalling 2600 pounds of this whole hams. shipped by ontario foods of canada. routine tests showed listeria in 54 boxes. they are dated november 14th and 15th. so far no reports from anyone getting sick from eating the product. this is a stressful time for college students with college exams and holidays looming ahead. man's best friend to the rescue.

>> he was stuck in the stroller and they took him to a hospital. from there he's gone. >> the stroller, with a design similar to this one, was deemed dangerous and had to be recalled in 2010 after bobby's death. the problem? the size of the space between the tray and the seat. >> the opening was large enough to allow a child's unharnessed torso to slide through, but not big enough for the head, so the head could get caught and the child could get strangled. bobby was not strapped in. strollers should be safe even if the child is unharnessed. the consumer reports tests have found several strollers in the past years that pose a similar strangulation risk. many have been recalled. but a recall doesn't mean the strollers are completely off the market. >> we recently went on craigslist and bought two

new similar strollers of that been recalled. >> in checking for a stroller check the recommendations. those strollers perform well in consumer reports safety test. whatever stroller you use, consumer reports said always be sure to use the harness to strap in your child. >> of course, that was michael finney. >> bobby's parents are suing the manufacture over the accident. if you already have a stroller and you want to check out the recall list, go to our website abc7news.com. there we have information on 7 on your side. >> a progress check on the demolition of the old eastern span of the bay bridge. sky 7hd flew over the span yesterday. as you see, most of the top deck is done. work to dismantle the span start the last month and is expected to take about six weeks to complete. it's interesting to watch. i was driving on the bay bridge the other day. it's like there are people working there. weather is cool, too.

>> it is certainly cool. once we get beyond this, which will be another day or two, we will talk about the lack of lane. the extended outlook showing very, very dry conditions not only this week but perhaps for several weeks. the past rain we got, of course, we are happy about it, but looking for more is harder and harder. high clouds spreading over parts of the bay and peninsula. the high clouds will continue to sink to the south. you can see them here from san jose where temperatures are all in the 30s. san francisco 39. that's in the city. we are looking at 37 in oakland. freezing redwood city just before that. los gatos and half moon bay has had a about the of a wind. an offshore wind and clouds to help us stay a little warmer. we will get into maximal radiation tonight and that means another freeze warning after 10:00 except for san francisco. freezing in novato, 34 and 36 in

the livermore valley. we will be changing things up a little bit in the next day or so. but this morning, of course, you are noticing the chillier conditions and the dry atmosphere. high pressure putting the lid on things and very little wind. looks like from this vantage point. but a spare-the-air day today. illegal to burn and below average high temperatures once again today. tomorrow we will come up and see more 50s. then tonight from 10:00 until 9:00 a.m. everywhere except san francisco. likely again monday night into tuesday. but tonight, with the dryer air, the look of high clouds, and the lack of wind, we should see one of the coldest nights. a lot like thursday morning with teens and 20s. higher pressure in the atmosphere pumping down the cold air from the gulf of alaska. compliments of another system offshore this is going to allow for things to really try out tonight. we are going to get some wind in the higher he will visions for an offshore flow, but that won't be helping us. case in point, livermore valley

the bay area's biggest parade was in oakland yesterday. more than 20 high school bands

kicked off the holiday children's holiday parade. people lined the street and the city center to lake merritt to watch. the fun highlights included children's characters like curious george and garfield, tap dancing trees and, of course, santa claus. there will be dozens and hundreds of santa clauses circulating in san francisco next weekend. it's the santa claus adventure. each year since 1994 santas have visited children around the world to bring in and drink in some christmas cheer. santa began in denmark in the 1870s. >> giving this holiday season

>> we are glad you are with us this morning. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, katie. we are out of our freeze warning into the spare the air afternoon. temperatures still quite busy in the north bay. mid-30s in fairfield. 36 in livermore. good morning. from mt. tam you can see the higher clouds and with a little bit of haze out there it's not going to get a whole lot better because the air quality in the north bay will be the least healthy. so mid-and upper 40s in your inland east bay today. around the bay near 50 in oakland. coastside, lighter winds today, near 50 degrees. we will warm up in the afternoon tomorrow but before that another freeze warning tonight. katie. >> lisa, thank you. as cold as it is in the bay area, it's much worse in other parts of the country. roads are treacherous.

this video in downtown dallas, texas. powerlines down and flights are cancelled with mor here's chuck severson. >> at least 16 people have died in the severe freeze gripping much of the u.s. many of the winter storm victims died on slick roads, including the driver of a pickup truck that hit an icy patch of ice on this bridge in louisville, texas. the car spun out of control and flipped over the guardrail into the water below. rescue crews braved freezing temperatures to get to the car. only 17-degree temperature. they had to get dry suits on and get down there and lift it up. >> rews spent hours trying that turned from rain to sleet and snow and some places black ice, forcing cs to slow down. backing up traffic for miles and flipping over trucks. road conditions so treacherous people were walking instead of driving to work. >> unlike the back roads and in the neighborhoods, it's really bad because nobody was driving.

>> powerlines snapped from oklahoma to texas in the freezing weather, leaving tens of thousands without power. and more than 3,000 passengers were forced to camp out at the dallas-fort worth international airport after 400 flights were cancelled. forecasters say the icy system is barreling into the mid-atlantic and virginia where the storm has a potential to be a historic ice event. as for the rest of the country, record lows saturday night. a new storm brewing in the northwest. chuck severson, abc news, new york. >> california central valley is also getting their share of cold weather. in sanger residents woke up to snow yesterday. they are only 375 feet above sea level. the snow also brings good news for skiers. china peek got snow for it's season opening. >> united airline officials have some explaining to do after a passenger got locked on a plane. friday night tom wagner woke up in a dark, cold cabin at a united express plane in houston. he had taken a nap on a flight

from louisiana and somehow crewmembers missed him in their walk-through at the end of the flight. >> what about a medical condition or something, what about a heart attack and i was dead? you just shut the plane and leave somebody on there? that's the way i look at it. >> wagner called his girlfriend, who was able to reach the airplane and the crews eventually let him out. united express said they are investigating the incident and gave wagner a $250 voucher. in the u.s. alone thousands will take to the skies this month and many travelers will also be carrying on their germs. here's abc news reporter david wright on how to avoid the dreaded airplane bugs. >> one of the busiest times of the year for travel also happens to be cold and flu season. travelers are higher at risk. more than 20% more likely to catch something. although not necessarily on the plane itself. surprisingly the cabin air is

cleaner than what you will find in most office buildings because it is circulated through hospital-grade filters. but airports are still germy environments. the hot zone includes the row in front of you, the row behind you, and all of these areas here. the tray table, the seat pocket. anywhere that's likely to have caught a sneeze. the airport, with those crowded ticket counters, tsa checkpoints and food courts is an even bigger petri dish for disease. no air filters there but plenty of coughs and sneezes. >> the best way to stay healthy is to keep your hands clean and for traveling that's a sanitizer. >> a single sneeze can produce 30,000 droplets that can spread as far as six feet. not exactly anyone's idea of spreading holiday cheer. david wright, abc news, los angeles. >> controversy for the california health exchange. covered california is reportedly sharing data with insurance acts

without consumers' consent. the los angeles times said the state provided personal information to the agents when consumers researched coverage online. those consumers did not complete an application, nor did they ask to be contacted. tens of thousands of people are affected. there is hopeful news on the blood cancer front. doctors say gene therapy is making a major advance against cancer and diseases like lymphoma and leukemia. white blood cells of removed from a patient, altered to make a gene that attacks cancer, and then returned to the patient. of more than 120 in the study, 24 had complete remission after the treatment. by some estimates, more than three quarters of people with hearing loss don't do anything about it. now an east bay start-up is trying to do something about that by making hearing aids dramatically cheaper and easier to get. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom has the story you will only see on abc7 news. >> tyrone moore has spent hours in rooms like this one wearing

the size of a grain of dirt under your fingernail. >> everything is done under a microscope. >> it takes steady hands and tweezers to put it together. there's nothing cheap about it. they keep the costs low by cutting the hearing clinic out of the equation which doesn't sit well with everyone. >> there's a chance they could have a tumor or something else wrong. >> audiologist mark sanford ford said hearing loss could be a sign of something more serious. he said he wishes they would leave the initial exam to a professional. >> it sounds pretty good, but they should get a professional exam and then future adjustments, they could do those online. but for tyrone, price is king. >> i'm one of those guys this grew up in a working poor family and we couldn't afford hearing aids. so i'm excited to the fact this is going to be something your average consumer can afford. >> in san leandro, jonathan bloom, abc7 news. coming up, a treatment once reserved for sports superstars is being used to treat hair loss. but is it a fad or a real fit? why your own blood could be the key. and taking a live look outside in san jose.

>> interest in prp has accelerated in recent years from its use in sports medicine, including the treatment of golfer tiger woods knee injury, to the use as a facial filler. some researchers believe it releases growth factors similar to stem cell therapy. but the benefits for hair loss are still being debated. san francisco dermatologist said there is only been minimal research with one small european study finding an apparent benefit. >> but there aren't any controlled long-term clinical trials on the use of this as a stand-alone treatment for hair loss. >> the doctor said the visual results have been encouraging. these before and after photos of male patients show an apparent thickening of the hair in front and crown. while they were not confirmed by a clinical hair count, the patients believe they are seeing benefits. >> after about a week or two i noticed the areas on my temple that were getting bare started
